Therapist Search Report

As we wrap up our first year at Therapist Search Report, thanks to all of the therapists for your support and collaboration on this effort to protect therapists' professional identities against aggressive and misleading therapist directories! Final Report of 2025

December 29th, 2025 Edition

This final edition of 2025 is thankfully a pretty calm one, with a single change worth calling out. The main shift this week came from healthgrades.com, which saw a noticeable uptick in visibility after a long stretch of sliding or staying flat. It’s not a dramatic reversal, but it is enough movement to stand out in an otherwise quiet week.

It also feels like a good moment to acknowledge that this is the last Therapist Search Report of 2025 and the end of our very first year doing this. The first edition went out in September, and since then, wow! We’ve watched directories come and go, odd (and questionable) new sites pop up, and the usual big players stay in their normal top spots. And we've also received so much wonderful support and encouragement from the therapist community!

The most visible domains continue to look very familiar. LinkedIn and Psychology Today remain the most consistent fixtures, followed by the usual mix of Facebook, Instagram, and other established directories.

Most week over week changes were small. A few sites drifted up or down by a point or so, but healthgrades.com was the only domain that really moved enough to feel meaningful.

If you look back at their historical performance, while they most recently have been quite stable, Health Grades used to have a much more commanding presence in therapist search results. We don't have an explanation for why they had such a dip back in September, but it'll be interesting to see if they're able to regain that presence -- and if this recent uptick is the first sign of that movement.

Weeks like this usually mean the algorithm is reinforcing patterns rather than experimenting. Not exciting, but useful. Also, given the holidays, it's not a shock that there aren't new aggressive websites attempting to get into the mix.

Domain Presence in the Top 10

This is a breakdown of the most common domains found at each search result position. The first 10 positions are the most critical, as they appear on the first page, so this breaks it down for positions 1 through 10.

At the very top of search results, nothing has changed. Psychology Today still dominates the #1 spot, and LinkedIn continues to occupy much of the rest of page one.

Small moves matter here. A shift from the third page toward the second doesn’t feel dramatic, but it’s often how longer term changes begin. Once you get a foothold on that coveted first page of search results, that website probably has enough power to stick around for a while.

When we started this concept of a "Therapist Search Report" in September, the goal was simply to help therapists see what shows up when someone searches their name -- to aggregate this data across a large data set to hopefully identify trends and raise awareness of new directories, both good and questionable. That goal still stands, and we’re excited to keep building on it in 2026.

We are open to ideas and feedback on how we can be even more helpful to therapists in the new year, so please, send me an email! You can reach me at jon@quilltherapysolutions.com.

Thanks for reading along this year, and we’ll see you in the first edition of the new year... next week!

Note: These statistics are intended to highlight broad patterns we've observed when searching for therapists by name. While we use a consistent methodology and a reasonable sample size, the results are not exhaustive. They may not reflect every search variation, every geographic region, or every change in search engine algorithms. This information should be viewed as a general snapshot, not a definitive or complete record. (And if you have ideas on how we can make our analysis even better, we'd love to hear them!)

Quill Therapy Solutions

About Quill: Quill helps therapists write clear, accurate, and professional therapy progress notes in less time. You record (or write) a brief session summary, and Quill formats those important details into a well-written note -- so you can focus on your clients, not your paperwork. And importantly, Quill does not record therapy sessions, so you don't have to sacrifice your ethics or your clients' privacy.

Also, therapists can now create their own custom documentation templates -- so whether it's an intake assessment, custom progress note format, or literally any other type of documentation, Quill has you covered.
