Therapist Search Report

Not much shifted this past week. But as we look ahead to 2026, let's think of how we can further secure our professional online identities! This edition of the report was published on December 15th, 2025

Another Calm Week

December 15th, 2025 Edition

This week was a fairly calm one -- mostly small shifts, with the usual leaders continuing to lead. LinkedIn remains the most consistently visible domain overall, and Psychology Today continues to dominate the very top of search results when it appears.

There were a handful of mild week-over-week movements, but nothing dramatic. A couple of social platforms nudged up or down (totally normal), and a few therapy-specific directories traded places in the middle of the pack.

We're glad so many therapists enjoyed our little "ghost directory" themed game last week! Here's the link if you want to give it another go: Attack of the Ghost Directories

(And you should check out our entire Advent Calendar for Therapists too!)

Looking across the most visible domains, the same names keep showing up: LinkedIn, Psychology Today, Facebook, Instagram, along with familiar directories like Zocdoc and Headway.

What’s interesting isn’t so much who is here, but how stable this group has become. The ordering changes a bit week to week, but the cast of characters stays largely the same. That consistency matters -- it means these are the sites therapists are most likely to want to pay attention to and actively manage.

Most of the movement this week happened in small increments. A few directories ticked up slightly, a few dipped slightly, and social platforms did what social platforms usually do -- bounce around.

There were no sudden breakouts or sharp drops, which is often a sign that the algorithm is settling rather than experimenting. Weeks like this are less exciting, but they’re useful for confirming which sites are reliably sticking around versus which ones only spike briefly and fade.

Domain Presence in the Top 10

At the very top of search results, the pattern hasn’t changed much. Psychology Today continues to hold the #1 position more often than any other site by a wide margin. LinkedIn remains a frequent occupant of the middle of page one, with directories like Headway and Zocdoc rotating through nearby spots.

Over time, a few newer directories are slowly becoming more “normal” in these top positions -- not surging, but appearing just often enough to feel familiar. That kind of gradual presence is usually a sign that a site is here to stay.

If you’re thinking about New Year’s resolutions, improving your online presence is a genuinely solid one.

This report is helpful as a defensive snapshot -- it shows what currently appears when someone searches for therapists by name. But going forward, I’d love to focus more on offense too!

And so some questions to the therapist community (and this report's readers):

  • What are the best website builders for therapists?
  • Which directories are actually legitimate and worth prioritizing?
  • What has worked in the real world for clinicians to establish their web presence?

I want to hear directly from therapists on this. If you have thoughts, recommendations, or strong opinions, email me at jon@quilltherapysolutions.com.

I think if we pull together our ideas and experiences and know-how, we can really put together a solid framework that other therapists can follow, documenting easy things to help secure their professional identity online.

Have a wonderful week!

Jon

Note: These statistics are intended to highlight broad patterns we've observed when searching for therapists by name. While we use a consistent methodology and a reasonable sample size, the results are not exhaustive. They may not reflect every search variation, every geographic region, or every change in search engine algorithms. This information should be viewed as a general snapshot, not a definitive or complete record. (And if you have ideas on how we can make our analysis even better, we'd love to hear them!)

Quill Therapy Solutions

About Quill: Quill helps therapists write clear, accurate, and professional therapy progress notes in less time. You record (or write) a brief session summary, and Quill formats those important details into a well-written note -- so you can focus on your clients, not your paperwork. And importantly, Quill does not record therapy sessions, so you don't have to sacrifice your ethics or your clients' privacy.

Also, therapists can now create their own custom documentation templates -- so whether it's an intake assessment, custom progress note format, or literally any other type of documentation, Quill has you covered.
